WORKSHOP

Impactful Service Design

Working With the Realities of Organisations
Service Design
THURSDAY 14 MAY 10:00

Service designers do a lot of heavy lifting. We join the dots, make sense of complex problems, and help teams see the bigger picture. It’s deeply rewarding work - and just as deeply frustrating when good design doesn’t translate into real impact. This workshop looks at what happens when design craft meets organisational dynamics: the human, political, and relational side of the work. You’ll learn how to read the system you’re in, spot openings for influence, and use the service design approaches you already know as powerful organising tools for change.

Design work doesn’t fail because designers aren’t doing enough. It often stalls because organisations have their own rhythms, incentives, and relationships that shape what becomes possible. In this workshop, we’ll take an honest look at why good service design sometimes struggles to land - and what that means for us as designers.

We’ll explore how to contribute to the conditions that make change more likely, how to use design tools to reveal the system and build alignment, and how influential relationships shape decisions. Together, we’ll examine the reality of compromise, reading organisational signals, and look at ways to protect your energy and passion while still moving the work forward.

You’ll leave with:

  • A clearer understanding of why service design work often stalls in complex organisations
  • Ways to use familiar design tools to build alignment and shared ownership
  • Ideas about how and when to influence, reframe and clarify - as well as to hold back
  • Ways to protect your energy and stay effective without over-investing emotionally
  • More confidence in your role and impact, even when things feel messy

This session is suitable for experienced designers, design leaders, and anyone trying to make meaningful change without formal authority.
